new obsession

i'm suddenly obsessed with this necklace by three sisters jewelry design....

i don't know if it's my impending overseas move or what, but the fact that you can have the latitude and longitude of your "home coordinates" stamped on one of the charms just really tugged at my freaking heart strings. the compass and the st. barbara charm (though my husband isn't an artilleryman) are nice touches as well....love it.

...wonder if i could change ol' barbara out for a st. christopher.....

My wedding gift

My wedding gift finally came in last week! It's a pop art style portrait of our pets! Gene told me about it on our wedding day, but he wanted me to have the final say on the design, so he had me look at a few (six when it all was said and done) different proofs and designs, and a few weeks ago I finally picked one! It came in las Friday, and I absolutely love it! It's a quirky, untraditional take on a wedding gift, but there's nothing I would have rather been given! My dogs mean the world to me, and this little piece of art featuring them is something I'll cherish forever!

Here's a shot of the entire picture-it's 1ft. By 3ft.....on canvas

Detailed shot of Lucy, my pretty pretty pink princess! I love her color combo!

Luke! Our "big brown boy" is now big and blue (and representin' with his MSU collar!)!!! The fact that the freckles on his nose are kind of highlighted here makes me smile!

And last, but not least, my littlest furry "pair of pants," Oliver. Looking so handsome! Choosing his color/background color was the most difficult to me, and while the pink/purple might have been the least "manly" choice, I think he pulls it off nicely!

Love my new piece of "art" and love my thoughtful hubby!

the condensed (who am i kidding? Nothing about this version is "condensed")version of events.

so we are about three weeks into this whole marriage thing, and honestly, nothing really feels that much different. Of course, i have a new piece of jewelry, and i've had to stop myself from calling gene my "fiance" at least 50 times, but aside from that, it's pretty much back to business as usual.

I haven't made a big giant post about the wedding and the details for a few reasons....for one, I'm too lazy to transfer any pictures onto my computer from my phone/camera/disc of a million pictures that a family friend took, and i've also been pretty busy trying to get back to being used to working and getting our apartment back into a tolerable, livable condition. I'm not even able to muster up the energy right now to do a detailed entry about the wedding, so (for now), i'm just gonna give you the cliffs notes version.....

the rehearsal dinner was way more fun and way more fabulous than i ever could have imagined it to be. it was everything i wanted - relaxed, fun, open - gene and i threw out the first pitch at the game (gene actually did the throwing, i just stood there looking weird), and then hung out in one of the party suites at autozone park and had a blast with our friends and family. lots of good food, booze, and baseball - what more could you ask for? plus, the redbirds actually won that night!

the wedding day was hectic and stressful - all the things people warn you about - and of course, i ran late all day long. i went into a near panic attack when it started raining as i was having my makeup done, and then i was told that the area we were in was under a flash flood warning....our ceremony was outside, and with the rain came the "how do you want us to proceed?" phone calls from our coordinator - i remember thinking that it was like a punch line to some awful joke....raining on a weatherman's wedding day.....anyway, mom and i had dad and gene check out the weather, and after being assured by both of them that the rain would be over with long before the actual ceremony started, decided that since we would be paying for all the flowers, chairs, etc. if we used them or not, that we would go ahead and proceed as planned. turns out that dad and gene were right, and it was totally dry outside by the time i walked down the aisle.

the biggest hitch that day was my floral designer.

When the planning started, i was very excited about her. nobody else that we hired for the wedding had ever heard of her or worked with her (which, in hindsight should have been a gigantic, waving red flag), but I thought she did beautiful work, and seemed very professional when we met, so i felt confident that she would be awesome. that being said, the closer the wedding got, the less professional she became, and the more issues we had with her. nothing ever stayed exactly the same from one conversation to the next, and if you asked her for detailed descriptions of anything, she would give you a half-assed, smart mouthed answer. i became increasingly uncomfortable with how reluctant she was to give us details, and quickly became irritated with the attitude she often gave to my mother in conversation and in email. she once said something that implied that our asking so many questions about details was somehow compromising her artistic integrity, and i almost lost my shit. i realize that as a "designer," you have the last say in how something looks, but if you are being paid a ridiculous amount of money to perform a service, i think the people paying you have a right to know exactly what it is that they are paying for....

anyway, the flowers that were at the ceremony/reception were beautifully arranged, but none of it was exactly what was agreed upon, described, or paid for. my bouquets didn't arrive until i was already an hour and a half into taking pictures (perhaps this doesn't seem like a big deal, but to me, a bride's bouquet is as much a part of her outfit as her veil or her shoes, and without it, i just didn't feel completely like a bride), and when they did arrive, there were issues - for one, you would think that she would have rushed the bouquets to me along with the guys boutonnières personally, with some sort of apology or explanation as to why she really put a damper on my wedding pictures, but instead, my bridesmaids had to physically go get their bouquets and flowers for the guys from her. Some assistant brought me my bouquet, and when it was first handed to me, water trickled down the front of my dress - this sort of irritated me, but it wasn't the end of the world - then i look down, and the ivory flowers in my bouquet were already on their last legs - the tips of them were already turning brown, as were all of the boutonnières for the guys, and every white or ivory flower in every other bouquet. one of the bridesmaids bouquets came without the grey satin handle, and when this was pointed out to the designer (by one of the bridesmaids), she insisted that the bridesmaid had lost it or misplaced it, when in reality, she had been the one who had forgotten to put it on the bouquet at all. When i'd first arrived at the museum to get ready for pictures, my two matrons of honor immediately told me about the "flower situation" - apparently the designer had just left to go pick up the bouquets, which hadn't even been completed, just a few minutes before i arrived at the venue. the designers claim was that the "rain put her behind schedule" because she had to wait until it cleared off to complete the floral stuff outside. my thoughts on that? if you know it's going to rain for a while, rendering you unable to complete anything outside, and you have other tasks that can be completed, like, say, THE BRIDES BOUQUET, then how about instead of sitting on your ass in the museum waiting on the rain to pass, you get into your vehicle, drive on over to wherever you do your business, and complete the things that you should have completed already? i fully expected, at some point, to hear an "i'm really sorry" about the issues that went on, but i never did. i passed her in the hallway a few times before the ceremony while we were doing pictures, and she never said a single word to me. from what i was told, she gave everyone she did speak to nothing but attitude, so i'm actually glad she didn't approach me.

I didn't get all bridezilla and go off about anything, because once we got to that point in the day, all i could think about was getting down the aisle. yes, my flowers were turning brown, and there are going to be some pictures where only half of the groomsmen have their flowers pinned on, but what good would getting worked up about it then have done me? none. it wasn't going to change the outcome, so i just decided that i'd take the punches as they came and roll with it. and that's exactly what i did. now that it's over, and i've had some distance, I've thought about complaining directly to her, or writing an email, but what's the point? it won't accomplish anything, and it's not like i get a "wedding do-over," so i'd just be wasting my time...but i'd still like to know where these "pink and green parrot tulips" we paid for are, because they certainly weren't at MY wedding.....anyway, enough about that.

the wedding was perfect, but in the moments prior to it starting, i was an emotional wreck. i sort of expected to be a little emotional, but not nearly as emotional as i was.....i stood there in the foyer of the museum, waiting to be told that i could go outside and start the ceremony, and these waves of different feelings just started to come over me. i felt excited and nervous, anxious and scared....and i was somehow simultaneously feeling the absence and presence of my grandmother at the same time (that probably doesn't make much sense, but that's the only way i know how to describe it - it killed me that she wasn't there, and yet, she was everywhere). i nearly hyperventilated before i walked down the aisle, and then cried through the entire ceremony. the aisle was probably the longest aisle EVER, but it was so unique and special - i can't wait until i have some pictures that show exactly what was going on there - it was basically a big spiral of chairs with an altar in the middle, so on my way to the altar, i literally walked past every guest....it made for a pretty long walk, but it was also very intimate and special. gene and i wrote our own vows - his were more sweet and funny, and mine were more serious. I should have probably gone with my instincts and gone with "funny," but i still deeply meant every word i said, so i have no regrets.

after the ceremony, everyone went in to the reception, and gene and i were taken to a private room with plates of food set up for us, so we could just spend a few minutes together, and actually eat. thank goodness we did that, because i don't think we stopped long enough during the entire reception to have been able to eat - i didn't even have an entire drink until almost 11:00 that night, because every time i picked one up, i'd have to go dance, or cut the cake, or throw my bouquet.....

i don't honestly even remember half of who was there. when we looked at the guest book, i probably said "i didn't see them!" a dozen times. I feel bad that i didn't get to talk to everyone who was there, but i suppose that's how most weddings go. people aren't kidding when they tell you that it flies by, and that it's all a blur, and that you won't remember half of what happened.

i remember quite a few things - a few of the highlight reel that runs through my brain at some point every day: every toast that was made (they all made me cry!), dancing with my dad, the first time i saw gene that day in the holly court, my mom and dad dancing together at the end of the night, the feeling of scooping confetti out of my dress, how lucky i felt to have my two best friends by my side as i married the love of my life.....

but there are plenty of things i missed or that i completely don't remember, and that's okay too - that's what pictures are for, right??? the important thing - the one that matters most of all - is that we did what we went there to do. i married my best friend, and we promised our lives to each other, and we did it all surrounded by people who love us and mean the world to us. it was an incredibly special day, and even with the little hitches, it was absolutely perfect.

i've had wedding withdrawal since almost the instant it was over. it was weird to realize the next day that the world no longer revolved around planning a wedding. i've sort of been at a loss, and kind of sad about it. i can't stop looking at bridal magazines - which is a horrible thing to do after your wedding, because i've found that you see things and go "i should have done THAT," even though when you saw it in the magazine before the wedding, you didn't even like it at all - so i tried to throw all of mine away, but couldn't bring myself to do it. i decide instead to give them to a friend who is getting married, so at least they will be in good hands, and not in some trash heap somewhere. i have taken all the magazines and books out of my apartment and put them into a box in my car to give to my friend, that way i can't sit around and look at them, and long to plan another wedding. i'll admit that i kept ONE magazine (the most recent issue of the knot, which is my favorite of all the magazines i ever purchased), and two of the books - one is an emily post etiquette book, and the other is just about floral arrangements....i figured these were safe, because neither are strictly all about weddings....

it helps with the withdrawals that i get to play bride one more time for my actual bridal portraits. we decided to do them after the wedding so that i wouldn't have to worry about screwing my dress up prior to the wedding (i'm so clumsy that if i'd done them before the wedding, i would surely have ended up completely destroying my dress, no matter how careful i was), and also so that i can get a few shots with my dogs in them. anyway, it's kind of exciting that i get to put that dress on one more time...

so this was supposed to be a short, condensed version of events, but as you can see, i went off on my little typical rants, and things got, uh...lengthy. hopefully i'll throw some pictures up here soon.

someday maybe i'll even have the energy to talk about the honeymoon......

are you laughing at the title of this entry now? nothing about this is condensed.....

curiouser and curiouser....

the past few days have been an emotional roller coaster for me to say the least. as if the stress of getting married and starting a life isn't enough, i've had the added stress of having to absorb the news that we will be moving what, to me, is halfway across the universe in just a handful of months.....but i don't want to talk about that right now.

right now, i need to go back a week, and talk about my fabulous bridal shower that my dear, sweet matrons of honor threw for me - everything about it was so adorable, and they worked so hard, and i love them to death for it!

it had an alice in wonderland theme, and this is yet another time in my life that i wish i'd remembered my camera (you would think by now i would carry around in my gigantic purse - i mean, i have dental floss in there, but no camera...), but i'm lucky because Kim Phillips' husband just so happens to be a pretty great photographer, and was there to capture all the cuteness of the party!

for the sake of the blog, i'll just share a few pictures i got on my phone.....i apologize in advance for their less than stellar quality....but it's a phone, ya know.....i like visuals....

Kim Killingsworth made everyone cupcake favors to take home! the stickers on the boxes have a picture of a tea party scene from alice in wonderland on them!!!

the tea pot where people could leave me words of marriage advice!

adorable decorations on the front porch of the pillow-thompson house where the shower was held.

some of the delicious food! and there was LOTS of it!!! lots of sweets, which are my absolute favorite things to eat in the world! my favorite HAD to be the sugar cookies...YUM!

the mad hatter had apparently been there at some point, but sadly, i missed him.....he left his hat behind though!

TEAPOTS! so freaking cute!!!! and they were EVERYWHERE!

my pictures don't do anything justice....one of the things i wish i'd gotten a picture of were the two different kinds of punch - one that made you shrink, and one that made you grow! ha! i got such a kick out of that...as well as a wicked sugar high...there was a little teapot with notecards for people to write me marriage advice on, and i loved going through and reading what people wrote.

and they even made me a guestbook out of this:

so cute, huh? i told you they were creative!!

anyway, i had such a fun time, and it was a really perfect afternoon! i love my dear friends - "the kims" - for doing something so special for me, and feel so lucky that they will both be there to stand next to me on my wedding day!

Gene's wedding band

My wedding band got its own post, so i figure Gene's should, too....his ring came today (actually, it came last week, but it wasn't the right ring, so a lot of panic ensued, and it had to be sent back and rushed, so I guess I should say that the right ring came today!):

Love it! Can't wait to put it on his finger!!!

Put a ring on it...

My wedding band finally came in! I was a bit nervous about it because they didn't have the exact one for me to try on in the store, so I just tried similar ones on, ordered it, and prayed it wouldn't suck, and I couldn't be more pleased! It's probably some sort of "bad luck" move to wear your wedding band before your wedding day, but I had to....just for a minute....

...and here's a pic of my band with my engagement ring....they make quite a lovely pair! I'm beyond happy!!!!

...please ignore my very pasty and dry hands....

yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!!!!

now i can't wait for gene's band to come in!

much love to Tacori (the makers of both of these beautiful rings) and Jones and Son (the best jeweler in Little Rock)!!!

...wouldn't have been possible without

My grandparents on their wedding day......

I love the look they are giving each other in this picture. It's pure, true love between two people who spent their whole lives in love with each other (seriously. They had been a couple off and on since they were barely teenagers!). There were some bumps in their road to "I do," but they got there, and I know they had a very happy marriage.

That look that they have....The feeling of happiness that's just radiating from them...I'm looking forward to knowing that feeling on our wedding day.

(..could my grandmother possibly be MORE beautiful?!?!?)

gifted.

so...one of the big fun parts of getting married (aside from the obvious gigantic party and being fawned over for a day by everyone you encounter...oh, and there's the being joined forever with the love of your life thing. ha) is obviously the gifts....

i've been living on my own for close to a decade now, so honestly, i've accumulated most everything i need or want as far as stuff for the kitchen, or the home necessities - (it also helps that i have a mom who is obsessed with dishes and cookware, and she tends to spoil me with these things) - so the registry process for us, while we found it to be great fun at times, was also a little difficult, because i'm pretty happy with the stuff i already own, and i can talk myself out of replacing just about anything - i had to keep reminding myself that it's totally okay to register for new things....that my toaster doesn't have feelings....that the bowls i already own aren't going to be offended if i get some new bowls to go along with them....that there won't be a confrontation of west-side story proportions between my old cookware and my new cookware....of course, when this is all over, some old things will be purged....and i have to remind myself that the new and the old can live in harmony together....

if i'm being 100% honest, long before we ever started registering, i knew what the very first thing would be that i was going to put on our registry....it's something i've wanted for a few years, but have never been able to justify buying: the le creuset whistling tea kettle.

it's an item that, whenever i've gone into a williams sonoma store, i've gone over to and obsessed over. i've geared myself up to buy it at least 5 times, but every single time i'd remind myself that not only do i already own ONE tea kettle, i own MANY, and it would be ridiculously silly to buy yet another one - after all, the ones i already own work perfectly fine and have no problem heating up the water for my tea.....but it didn't matter how many times i'd talk myself out of it, i'd still keep up this obsession with this tea kettle.....

so i promised myself that when we went to register for wedding gifts, i was gonna put the tea kettle on there. it's been on my mind ever since.

last week, my mother called to tell me that a package had come to her house - it was our first wedding gift. i didn't expect them to be coming so soon, but i was still really, really excited about it. she wouldn't tell me where it was from, so i just had to wait it out for the next few days - i said to her on the phone "i don't know what it is, and it doesn't matter because i'm just excited to get anything, but i know what i hope it is....."

IT WAS FROM WILLIAMS SONOMA.....

IT'S MY FREAKING TEA KETTLE!!!!!
my precious, whistling, azure blue, fancy tea kettle....
(not the BEST picture, but whatever....)

as if it wasn't exciting enough just to get our first wedding gift......to open it and find out that it was the thing i absolutely wanted more than anything else we had registered for totally blew my mind - my dear cousin sent us this incredible, adorable tea kettle, and while i'm sure he just wanted to send us a nice gift (mission accomplished!), what he also did was unknowingly make an awesome memory for us (of opening our very first wedding gift) AND fulfill my silly tea kettle dreams!!!

the arrival of the tea kettle seemed to start a sort of domino effect - we've actually gotten a few other gifts over the last few days - and even though this entry might make it seem as though i'm playing favorites, they really are all just as nice and thoughtful as the tea kettle, and each time mom tells me that there's a gift for us, i feel surprised and little wave of giddy excitement - that being said, it's time for me to go and get started on writing some thank you notes!

control

so i've been a bitchy, sobbing, snappy mess for a good chunk of the last few months, and it's time i just get a grip and take control of the situation.

when i woke up yesterday morning, i told myself that i was, from that moment on, going to make a large effort to calm the hell down and stop being SO stressed about the wedding. I'm a little over 24 hours into it, and i'm not sure how well i'm doing, but i can say that i haven't blown up at anyone over anything today (and believe me - there were moments of biting my tongue and mentally counting to ten and all that crap), and i've only cried once (this might not seem that impressive to you, but i typically cry over something trivial at least 3 times a day. ha.) and the crying, for the record, was completely unrelated to the wedding...

i'm feeling better. more hopeful, i guess. more like everything really IS going to be fine. i never envisioned myself ever getting THIS worked up over a wedding, but i have - but it seems like with each day, a new task is completed, and with it, a little stress is relieved. there are still tiny, trivial things that are finding ways to grate on my nerves, but i keep reminding myself that they will work out as well....

part of what's helping is that we've done some exciting things the last few days - for one, we ordered our wedding bands! nothing says pressure like picking out the accessory that you have to love enough to wear every day for the rest of your life with EVERYTHING, but we both made our decisions pretty quickly - the one i chose is the one that was designed to go with my engagement ring (the only decision i really had to make was to have diamonds halfway around or all the way around - i went with halfway....), and gene has pretty much had his ring picked out for months....and while spending that much money in that short of a time is enough to make your head spin, i suppose it's worth it....

we picked out the suits for the groosmen/ushers last week as well - this is something that's been a big stress to me, because i felt like the wedding was coming so quickly, and we still didn't have a suit picked out, so it was a pretty big relief to get it off my shoulders and off my mind - it literally took 10 minutes to pick them out, so i guess maybe i shouldn't have been such a spaz about it, but who knew it would be THAT easy? i mean, it took months of looking for bridesmaids dresses before i found one that didn't make me want to puke, and even longer to find one that i thought would work for the wedding....apparently suits are pretty generic....

we finished up our registries. finally. a month or so ago, we registered at all the typical places - bed, bath and beyond, dillards, williams sonoma....but there are a few stores in my hometown that have bridal registry, and i hadn't quite made it around to all of them to set registries up, but we got it done. gene seemed totally uninterested in the registry process (except when we were at williams sonoma....the $600 espresso machine on the registry? thats ALL gene.....), but i suppose that's the norm for guys. He seemed more concerned about where we are going to PUT all the stuff we get.....i mean, let's be honest - we live in 1,100 square feet with minimal storage space....not much room for extra stuff.....but i have to keep reminding him that someday we WILL have more room, and that the stuff we register for isn't necessarily for right this second - it's stuff you'll use for years - some of it forever....and until then we will just, uh....store it....at my mom's house. HA!

engagement pictures were supposed to happen last week - some unfortunate, unavoidable crap happened, and we had to reschedule for this thursday - in the grand scheme of things its not a HUGE deal, but still kind of an irritating set back....i did get some beyond awesome shoes for them though, so i'm pretty excited about that....

speaking of shoes....this is something that's been on my mind for like, a year - even before i bought my dress, i was worried about finding the perfect shoe - i've gone from one end of the spectrum to another, and i have been to dozens of stores and looked at thousands of shoes....after a lot of disappointment of not finding something that was "just right," i finally found my wedding shoes - check out these beauties:

THIS is my wedding shoe! it took a freaking miracle to find them in THAT color in MY size, but it all worked out and they came in and are fabulous - the only concern i had was that they might make me taller than my dad (they are 4 inches tall!), making our walk down the aisle kind of awkward, but luckily they don't - i'm more excited about my shoes than just about anything....

i've also decided that midway through the reception, i'll probably change into a different (short, but still white (or maybe a very muted pink...) and sorta bridal) dress - mostly because i figure that after being in the dress for half the day, i'll be exhausted and hot....i realize that a lot of people will find this to be crazy because, after all, you only get to wear a wedding gown once in your life, but i have pretty fond memories of feeling that way about my prom dresses and then literally counting down the seconds until i could change into something else - let's be honest - wedding gowns are beautiful, wonderful things, but they are not designed for comfort.....i'd kinda like to close out my reception at least sort of comfortable, and definitely able to go pee without having someone help me in and out of the stall, or having someone hold my skirt up over my head.....of course, this presents the stress of finding another dress, but whatever....i think i can handle it....maybe. possibly.

so for the first time in a while, there's some positivity from me. i'm gonna try my hardest to keep bridezilla down as much and for as long as i can.... emphasis on the word "try".....just kinda got to keep reminding myself that this is supposed to be fun, and to keep my eye on the important things....as hard as it might be and as cloudy as it all gets sometimes.....

they should seriously make pills for this.

thanks, penguin!

so i mentioned previously something about sending care packages to gene all the time, and i did, but i guess i feel like i should mention all the nice things he did for me while he was deployed - for instance, the giant fortune cookie in the picture above - this was delivered to me last week, and it was seriously freaking HUGE and so cool and sweet......then, he contacted Cupcakes on Kavanaugh and special ordered these cupcakes for my birthday, and had my friend (thanks, kim killingsworth!) deliver them to me:

Breakfast of champions!!!!

he also sent a LOT of flowers - in fact, there is a joke around work that i don't have to buy flowers for the wedding because during his deployment, gene has sent me enough floral arrangements to cover the entire ceremony. every girl loves flowers, and i'm no exception - they would come at random, unexpected times - sometimes more than once a week - and while i hate that he's been deployed, i can honestly say that i will miss getting flowers when he comes back (because, lets face it, while i DO get flowers when he's here, they are pretty few and far between)

i always took pictures of them so that i could email them to him so he could see what he sent, so with the end of his deployment fast approaching, i kind of wanted to post an ode to my flowers...someone cue up some nat king cole music or something:

it's crazy to me that i have found someone who does so many thoughtful and sweet things for me. i know that these are all just "things," but the effort that they take (especially for someone in his position right now) are constant reminders of how lucky i am, and how much i truly am loved.

thanks, penguin.

NSFG part 2! (GENE, SERIOUSLY, DONT READ THIS)

so today i went to a bridal boutique here in little rock called Proposals to look at wedding dresses. i didn't go to buy a dress - in fact, i was only going there to convince myself that the dress i'd found a few weeks ago at low's really was "the one," and so that i would avoid "buyers remorse," because i could always say "i looked more than one place, and i'm sure this is it"

to be honest, when i walked into Proposals this morning, my heart wasn't in it. I was just kind of going through the motions and just getting it all out of my system, so to speak, and i thought this would be a quick, easy, painless thing that would just make me rest a little easier - and things started out innocently enough. i tried on a few dresses that were so-so, and some that made me laugh hysterically, and some that were just so ridiculous that i couldn't even come out of the dressing room. i even found a couple that i sort of liked that with a few small tweaks could have worked out just fine, and then the most unexpected thing happened.

i found THE DRESS......and its NOTHING like the one i thought i wanted.

i'm not sure who picked it out. not sure who found it in the racks of gowns hanging there, and honestly, had i seen it on the hanger in the rows of dresses, i probably would have pointed and laughed at it and just completely dismissed it, but someone pulled it out, and i had promised myself i would try on anything and everything, and i'm glad i honored that promise to myself.

i tried it on, stepped out of the dressing room, and for the first time in this entire bridal/wedding dress shopping experience, my mom cried. i've seen moms cry on t.v. when their daughters try on wedding dresses, but i really didn't expect my mom to do it. we aren't the kind of woman who cry over organza and tulle, but there she was, crying in the middle of a bridal boutique. i didn't get what the big deal was, and then i got on the pedestal and looked at myself, and then *i* started crying. i had a moment. i actually smiled and danced (i totally did the robot in my bridal gown) and laughed and just knew that THIS was it.

i've listened to brides and bridal consultants spew the line of "when its YOUR dress, you just KNOW" and honestly, i've felt like that was a bunch of crap. I've never tried on a shirt or a pair of pants or some underwear and gone "hey, you know what, THIS IS IT," and those are things i'll get to wear a bunch! up until today, a bridal gown was, to me, nothing more than a really expensive piece of clothing (that i'm only gonna wear once), and while i thought that i'd probably have a feeling of "okay, this will do just fine" i didn't expect to feel like "this IS MINE - this is IT - this is RIGHT" - (in fact, the only time in my life i've ever felt that way about anything is when i met gene) but i felt it, and while its nothing like i'd pictured in my head, and pretty different from what i had in my head when i woke up this morning, i know that it's my dress, and i'm super excited.

this isn't the best picture, because honestly, a camera can't do it justice - plus, its just not as pretty on a hanger as it is on a body, but i think its still beautiful, and i'm so excited. i think it's perfect for what we are doing - an outdoor, summer wedding in a courtyard - and it's light and airy and romantic.....i'm gonna make a small change (we are going to give it a sweetheart neckline) but other than that, it's staying the same.

ugh. i'm totally bummed at the low quality of the pictures here, but i guess they'll do - i wish the ruffle was easier to see....here's one thats more from the side:

so now i have MY dress - next up...the bridesmaids!!!!

at least now my stress level has dropped about 20 percent! ha!

the dress - this post is NSFG (not safe for gene. ha.)

I have an appointment at Low's in brinkley on the 21st of this month to look for dresses - I actually made the appointment over a month ago, and to be honest, I've been on the verge of hyperventilation about it ever since. Dress shopping makes me nervous and anxious like nothing else I can think of - even more than the guest list! It's not something I've been looking forward to at all, which makes me like, the strangest bride to be on earth.

Since i got engaged, whenever i run into someone that i havent seen in a while, the first thing they ask is "what does your dress look like?" - when i tell them "oh, i don't know - thats really the last thing on my mind, and I haven't started looking yet," i get this look of horrified puzzlement and i can almost see the wheels turning in their head as they calculate how many months it is until my wedding day. trust me, y'all, i'm well aware that the clock is ticking. loudly. right in my freaking ear.

if i'm being honest, i've always had these elaborate dreams of wearing a vera wang on my wedding day. most specifically, THIS vera wang:

ahhh. the vera wang diana.....this picture has been on my fridge since days after i got engaged - i see it in magazines and scream.....there is a girl on a bridal message board who bought this, and i don't even know her and i hate her guts.....unfortunately for me, this dress is way over any amount that i feel comfortable spending on a wedding dress - and believe me, i've seriously considered it - i've even figured out ways i could actually afford it, but i've grown to be much more reasonable than to drop that much money on something i'd wear one time. I know myself well enough to know that if i did find it, try it on, love it and buy it, that even though i'd be happy, 3 months after the fact i'd think "wow, i could have done so much stuff with the money i spent on that dress that is now preserved in a box in the top of a closet at my mom's house" - I realize that wedding dresses are expensive, but some of her designs go above and beyond the span of a reasonable dress budget, and when you factor in a veil and alterations and shoes....its enough to make your head spin....so i gave up my vera wang fantasy, and i've focused on finding something i can not only afford, but also not feel guilty about.

so a couple of weeks ago, i had to go to helena for just a few hours one day - on the way there i got this overwhelming urge to try on wedding dresses - like something was pushing me towards a bridal salon - Low's is just an hour away from where my parents live, right between helena and little rock, so i called my mom to see if she could take of a few hours of the afternoon and go look with me - she said she could, so i called Low's and they fit me in.

i say they "fit me in" but really, i was the only freaking person in the place...not that it's relevant.....

i didn't go in with the intention of finding "the dress" or even to buy anything that day - i fully intended (and still do) to keep my appointment on the 21st. This visit was simply to help me break through the anxiety, and to maybe get an idea of what direction i'd like to go in.

we walked in and i had to fill out some silly little form, and then the consultant came out to greet us. i say "greet," but really it was more of a "hi, my name is _______.....whats your budget? okay, lets go" followed by an ushering up the stairs. i wasn't really given a chance to explain what i liked or what i thought i might be looking for, but i didn't really have much time to object or interject, so i just went with it - (overall the experience was lackluster and not what i expected at all, but thats a whole other post - at the time i thought "well, this isn't my real appointment anyway, but later i realized that THEY didn't know that....but i digress) the minute we hit the top of the stairs, i saw this horrid $5,200 creation that was extremely low cut in the front and looked like someone slaughtered a stark white parrot and then glued its feathers all over their wedding gown along with a million little crystals, except on the giant slit in the front (who has a slit in their wedding gown??? and i made some sarcastic remark about it looking like something a lounge singer who works part time as a stripper would wear, which the consultant didn't hear, or at least pretended not to), and then right next to it was this little number:

i took the next picture in the dressing room when the consultant was off doing something else - you aren't supposed to take pictures, but i saw the opportunity and i took it - i think i was actually wearing some god awful mermaid-esque glitter bomb explosion when i took this photo....or maybe i was in the one that i said looked like wilma flinstone...i can't remember, but it's not important anyway....

i jokingly said to my mom "HEY. THATS MY DRESS!" and so the consultant took it off its little display thing and put it in a dressing room for me to try on. of course, its a tiny sample size, and i'm totally NOT a tiny sample size, but it fit well enough for me to see that its incredible and i love it. not to mention, it's price tag is way below what i'd initially expected to spend on a dress, so thats a bonus. it's everything i'd said i wanted - simple, comfortable, classic, and not stark white. AND IT HAS POCKETS.

however, as i stood there, i thought "seriously, this is the first dress you've tried on. this can't be "IT" - so i tried on a few more, and i tried on a wide variety - lots of sparkle, giant princess skirts, ones with sleeves.... but stayed completely fixated on this dress, and i've remained completely fixated on it for the last, what, two weeks.....I'll look through magazines to see if i can find anything better, and when i think i have, i just grab my phone and look at this picture, and i'm back on this dresses team.

I've had at least one conversation a day with my mom about this dress since i tried it on (i'm certain i'm about to drive her crazy about it), and her advice to me is some that i'm definitely taking - I'm going to visit a couple of places around here in little rock and try on other dresses before my appointment at Low's on the 21st. that way there will be no shoppers remorse, and i won't spend time wondering if i would have found something better if i'd just kept looking. maybe i will find something better, but for now, this is IT for me, and it's a weird comfort to know that its there waiting when i'm ready to make the decision, and knowing that it exists is going to make any other dress shopping a lot less stressful.....and i can't help thinking how funny it will be if the dress i choose is the very first one i tried on...

a sweet surprise

gene has always been one of those "flower" guys - over the last couple of years, i've gotten lots of flowers from him, and most of the time they were for no reason at all - i love that about him - i mean, what girl isn't into getting flowers?

since he's been gone, of course i've been missing everything about him, and i think he senses it when we talk that i'm having a pretty hard time with this.  Yesterday, i got a special delivery....

it amazes me that he's halfway across the world, and has so much going on, and he still manages to do things like this for me.  Even with him gone, i realize a little more everyday how much i truly, absolutely love him, and how lucky i am to have found this incredible man to share my life with.  maybe there's some truth to that whole "absence makes the heart grow fonder" thing.... although i find it hard to believe that it's possible for me to  be fonder of him than i already AM!
